Welcome to Dr. D. Y. Patil Biotechnology and Bioinformatics Institute, a place where the pursuit of excellence in Biotechnology comes to life. As the Director of this esteemed institute, it gives me immense pleasure to extend warm and heartfelt greetings to all of you.

In the year 2004, amidst the thriving city of Pune, a pioneering institution was born - Dr. D. Y. Patil Biotechnology and Bioinformatics Institute. Established as one of the constituent units of Dr. D Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune, currently its roots are planted in the PCMC region.

Our vision is to foster a generation of skilled and passionate biotechnologists who will drive scientific advancements, improve lives, and shape a better future for all. With unwavering commitment, we strive to create an environment that nurtures curiosity, innovation, and a deep understanding of the biological sciences.

Our dedicated faculty members bring a wealth of experience and knowledge, ensuring that our students receive top-notch education and hands-on training in cutting-edge technologies. Prof. Neelu Nawani completed Ph. D. in Microbiology in 2003 from University of Pune, India on understanding the diversity of chitinases from bacteria and health applications of the end-products. Her research has mainly focused on Environmental Biotechnology, Bioremediation, prevention of water pollution and air pollution, development of diagnostic markers for detection of infections and diseases, probiotics, emergence of antimicrobial resistance and sensors for the detection of biomolecules in human body and pollutants in the environment. Prof. Nawani has undergone several international scientific trainings at Germany, Sweden and France. Prof. Nawani received several fellowships few of which include fellowship for doctoral studies from University of Pune, Lila Poonawalla fellowship, Junior Research Fellowship, Senior Scholarship for Science from Lady Tata Memorial Trust, Young Scientist Fellowship from Department of Science and Technology DST, Government of India. She was awarded the title of “Peace Ambassador to United Kingdom” at the hands of Hon’ble Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, through a joint effort of Lila Poonawalla Foundation, Pune and Asha Foundation, UK.

Prof. Nawani and her team received the “Gandhian Young Technology Innovation Award” from SRISTI-BIRAC at the hands of President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind for their innovation. Their innovations have received “Best prize at India International Science Festival 2021 organized by Vignyan Prasar, Ministry of Science and Technology; “Drug Discovery Hackathon 2020 Prize” from AICTE and MHRD, Govt. of India. Prof. Nawani is a producer of three scientific documentaries, of which two were nominated at the National Science Film Festival of India, one of the films received the “Special Award for Technical Excellence- Research” at the National Science Film Festival of India 2022. Prof. Nawani received Research Award from Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth in the year 2014 and she bagged the award second time in year 2015. She received Consistent Performance Award in the year 2020 from Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune. She has received “Women Achiever Award 2022” by the Rotary Club of Pune and Award for “Carving gender balanced leadership 2016” by Sandvik Company, Pune.

Prof. Nawani has successfully completed 16 research projects funded by Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, Sweden and DST and DBT, Government of India with project value of nearly 18 crores. She has mentored more than 100 students and has published 105 research papers and reviews and 8 patents (Indian and US). She has 202 technical abstracts to her credit. She has edited five journal volumes and two books and has shared her research expertise at different national and international scientific meetings. She is a visiting exchange professor to University of Skovde, Sweden through the Linnaeus-Palme program funded by the Swedish Council of Higher Education.

Dr. Nawani has held several responsibilities at administrative level. She is member of Board of Management at Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth and was a member of Board of Trustees, Lila Poonawalla Foundation during 2006-09. Dr. Nawani has reviewed the international editions and global editions of several reputed books, few notable ones are “Global Edition of Microbiology: An Introduction, 12th Edition by Gerard Tortora, Berdell Funke, Christine Case; Campbell Essential Biology with Physiology, 5th Edition by Eric Simon, Jean Dickey, Jane Reece, Kelly Hogan and Biology: Life on Earth with Physiology, 11th Edition by Teresa Audesirk, Gerald Audesirk, Bruce Byers.
